A place to grow: Scaling up Ontario’s firms

Released January 2016

'Scaling up,' or growing businesses, can reduce Ontario's prosperity gap. Traditionally, this means increasing a firm's number of employees. But growing employee headcount is no longer relevant or appropriate for jurisdictions like Ontario that are transitioning from a manufacturing to a knowledge-based economy. In A place to grow: Scaling up Ontario's firms, the Institute assesses factors associated with firm size using an alternative measure: revenue per worker. An analysis of the 127 provincial supports available to Ontario's businesses is also provided.

There are two versions of the Working Paper. The longer version provides more supplementary analysis on the effect of each variable on firms.

A sortable list of the 127 programs is also available for download.
