Institute to release working paper on small business, entrepreneurship, and innovation on Feb 23

Join us as Roger Martin, Chairman of the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity and Dean of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management releases our working paper on small business, entrepreneurship, and innovation.

The event will be held on February 23, 8:00-10:30 am at The Royal Sutton Ballroom at The Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.

Roger Martin to release Task Force’s 10th Annual Report on Nov. 15 in Toronto.

Join us as at the 10th annual report by Ontario’s Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity, and Economic Progress. In addition to a 10-year retrospective on Ontario’s economic progress, the report will set out an agenda for closing the innovation and prosperity gaps as the Ontario government begins its new mandate.

The Survey of Innovation and Business Strategy (SIBS) is a joint project by Industry Canada, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and Statistics Canada, which was initiated to better understand the market and policy factors that encourage or discourage the adoption of entrepreneurial and innovation-oriented business strategies. The aim of SIBS is to help the government develop policies to ensure Canada’s future economic competitiveness and prosperity. The purpose of the Oct 13th Workshop is to present the latest findings from the 2011 SIBS Report as well as engage the business community in discussing the survey results.

Conference on Canada’s innovation imperative - 2011

The Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity to release its annual Report on Canada’s innovation imperative.

The report will be released by the Institute’s Chairman, Roger Martin, Dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

James Milway to speak at The 2nd Canadian Quality Congress

Take this opportunity to listen to our Executive Director James Milway discuss Canada’s under performance in productivity and innovation.  Federal, provincial, and many local governments have adopted innovation agendas to commercialize research and stimulate the growth of new industries.  Based on the research conducted by the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity, Milway will discuss Canada’s innovation gap and identify some of the factors that help explain it.  He will focus on the requirements for good public policy on innovation – the need for effective support for innovation and competitive pressure. 

Innovation is the result of an eco-system that has both support and pressure.  However, much of our public policy is based on the premise that innovation is a linear process of commercializing research results.  Consequently it is too often aimed solely at providing support, particularly for the hard sciences.  Innovation policy needs to be balanced with efforts at strengthening management and boosting competitive pressure in the economy.

Institute to release Working Paper 12, Management Matters

We are pleased to announce that Roger L. Martin, Chairman of the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity will be releasing Working Paper 12 on Wednesday March 11, 2009, 8:00 to 10:00 am.

The Working Paper features recent research done by the Institute on the quality of management in Canada’s and Ontario’s manufacturing sector in comparison to other developed and developing economies.  It also presents new research on the impact of management on regional and national prosperity.

Roger Martin, Chairman of the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity will present the Working Paper.  Joining Roger will be:

Michelle Alexopoulos, Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto. Michelle has developed a methodology for tracking technology innovation through an economy based on increases in the publication of books and articles on specific technologies.  She has applied this approach to measuring innovation in management techniques and their impact on the productivity and prosperity of the economy.  Michelle’s results and conclusions are part of the new research in this Working Paper.

Carol Deacon, Associate Principal at McKinsey & Company. Last year, McKinsey released a report on Canada’s global competitiveness, including the roles culture and management practices play in driving innovation and competitiveness. Carol will be sharing some key findings from McKinsey’s research, discussing how they complement the Management Matters research, and teeing up options for Canada to enhance its culture, innovation, and competitiveness.

Charlotta Mellander, Research Director at the Prosperity Institute of Scandinavia, Jönköping International Business School.  Charlotta has collaborated with Richard Florida and Kevin Stolarick with the University of Toronto’s Martin Prosperity Institute to examine the factors that shape economic development in Canadian regions.  In their work they assessed the impact of management occupations on regional income.

Roger Martin and Richard Florida to release report on Ontario

In the 2008 Ontario budget, the Ontario Government asked Roger Martin, Dean of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto and Richard Florida, Director of the Rotman School’s Martin Prosperity Institute to “undertake a study of the changing composition of Ontario’s economy and workforce, examine historical changes and projected future trends affecting Ontario, and provide recommendations to the Province for ensuring that Ontario’s economy and people remain globally competitive and prosperous.”

The report of their findings and recommendations, to be released on February 5 is an important element of Ontario’s economic strategy.  Following its release, the authors hope to engage Ontarians in an ongoing dialogue about achieving advantage for Ontario in the creative age.

Release of working paper 11

Alexandra Iwanchuk Bibbee is a senior economist at the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, an inter-governmental organization comprising 30 mainly industrialised nations committed to democracy and the market economy. She has been a staff member of the Economics Department since 1990, having worked in the balance of payments, fiscal affairs and general economic assessment policy areas and on the country desks for Germany, Austria, Turkey, Italy, and Norway. She currently serves as head of desk for Canada and New Zealand. Before coming to the OECD Alexandra held positions at the International Monetary Fund and the US Treasury. She has a B.A. from Kent State University (Ohio) and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin – Madison (1988).

Peter Jarrett, Head of Country Studies, OECD
Peter Jarrett is a senior official of the Paris-based Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, an inter-governmental organisation comprising 30 mainly industrialised nations whose goal is to provide members with policy advice in every area except justice, culture and defense. He has been a staff member of the Economics Department since 1985. He began as an expert in supply-side econometric modeling before heading a series of country desks, notably those of France, Belgium/Luxembourg, Portugal, the United States, Iceland, Japan and Ireland. Since 1999 he has headed a Country Studies division that has comprised a variety of member and non-member countries. Currently his stable includes Canada, New Zealand, France, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Indonesia, Brazil and Israel. Before coming to the OECD Peter spent over five years working in the Research Department of the Bank of Canada. He holds a BA from the University of Toronto (Victoria) and a PhD from Harvard (1979).

They will be joined by a panel of observers of the Canadian economy with opportunities for audience involvement.

The Hollowing Out of Corporate Canada – Myth or Reality?

Canada’s global corporate leaders in a world stock market hot on commodities and takeovers

Much has been written and said over the past few years about the hollowing out of corporate Canada. While this may be a lamentable emotional issue for most Canadians, what are the implications for Canadian investors and portfolio managers? The Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity has compiled a list of Canada’s Global Leaders and tracked changes to that list that have occurred since 1985. State Street Global Advisors has recently worked with the Institute to track stock market performance of this list and its conclusions are both revealing and surprising.

The Federal Government judged the issue of global competitiveness and the need to create domestic conditions to foster the development of Canadian-based global businesses of such importance that it formed a blue ribbon panel chaired by L.R. (Red) Wilson. That panel is to report its recommendations to the Government by June 30, 2008.

Carolyn Acker is Executive Director of Pathways to Education.  Its mission is “to ensure that young people from at-risk and/or economically disadvantaged communities achieve their full potential by getting to school, staying in school, graduating and moving on to post-secondary programs.” Miles Corak has recently joined The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Ottawa as a Professor.  Previously Miles was the Director of the Family and Labour Studies Division at Statistics Canada.  His areas of expertise include social policy, poverty, and intergenerational mobility Elizabeth McIsaac is Executive Director, Toronto Regional Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC), a multi-stakeholder council that is working to improve access to employment for immigrants in the City of Toronto and the Regions of Peel, York and Halton, so they are better able to use the skills, education and experience they bring with them to Canada.

Why Investment Matters for Ontarians

This conference explored the importance of investment from the perspectives of all of the stakeholders in Ontario’s prosperity. Recent reports by the Institute for Competitiveness and Prosperity, the Ontario Economic Summit, and others have concluded that Ontarians need to invest more for future prosperity. This includes investment in hard assets such as machinery, equipment, and buildings; investment in technology, such as new products or processes; investment in infrastructure; and investment in human assets, such as education and training, the well-being of communities, and our immigrants.
