James Milway to speak at The 2nd Canadian Quality Congress

August 23-25, 2010
Toronto, Ontario

Take this opportunity to listen to our Executive Director James Milway discuss Canada’s under performance in productivity and innovation.  Federal, provincial, and many local governments have adopted innovation agendas to commercialize research and stimulate the growth of new industries.  Based on the research conducted by the Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity, Milway will discuss Canada’s innovation gap and identify some of the factors that help explain it.  He will focus on the requirements for good public policy on innovation – the need for effective support for innovation and competitive pressure.

Innovation is the result of an eco-system that has both support and pressure.  However, much of our public policy is based on the premise that innovation is a linear process of commercializing research results.  Consequently it is too often aimed solely at providing support, particularly for the hard sciences.  Innovation policy needs to be balanced with efforts at strengthening management and boosting competitive pressure in the economy.

Canada’s global corporate leaders in a world stock market hot on commodities and takeovers

                            Tuesday, March 4, 2008

Much has been written and said over the past few years about the hollowing out of corporate Canada. While this may be a lamentable emotional issue for most Canadians, what are the implications for Canadian investors and portfolio managers? The Institute for Competitiveness & Prosperity has compiled a list of Canada’s Global Leaders and tracked changes to that list that have occurred since 1985. State Street Global Advisors has recently worked with the Institute to track stock market performance of this list and its conclusions are both revealing and surprising.

The Federal Government judged the issue of global competitiveness and the need to create domestic conditions to foster the development of Canadian-based global businesses of such importance that it formed a blue ribbon panel chaired by L.R. (Red) Wilson. That panel is to report its recommendations to the Government by June 30, 2008.

                            Dr. Avery Shenfield

                            Enterprise Strategy Roundtable:
Manufacturing costs for Ontario car makers are skyrocketing, prompting layoffs.
Consumer expectations for the lowest price ravage every market around the globe.
Canada’s six banks with their acquired legacy systems struggle to compete with over 5000 flexible and modern banks in the U.S. today.

In these challenging times, how can Canadian business leaders shake off complacency and grow their enterprises to:
                            • Compete powerfully against “low-cost” competitors in the global marketplace?
                            • Meet and exceed customer demand for real time access to operational data - such as inventory, orders and shipments?
                            • Speed up development-while lowering the cost of implementing innovation?

In ICT, as in any knowledge intensive industry, the means of production exits the workplace everyday at closing time. Brainpower is the fundamental ingredient in the products and services we produce.  So it pays ICT companies to maintain a strong understanding of the key issues in the industry’s labour market.

ICTC, the Information and Communications Technology Council, is the most trusted source for current data and analysis on Canada’s ICT labour market. ICTC and ITAC are pleased to offer a rich, half-day session to update your knowledge about labour market issues affecting your business.  Labour Market Intelligence Day will feature and exploration of key concepts such as productivity, strategic economic planning and diversity presented by leading authorities such as author, David Ticoll, James Milway of the Institute for Prosperity and Competitiveness and Wendy Cukier of Ryerson University.  The morning will also feature the results of new studies by the Branham Group and Michael Robinson Consulting on trends in the industry and current data on college enrollment in ICT related fields of study.

Labour Market Intelligence Day will truly enrich your intelligence regarding the ICT labour market so vital to your company’s success.  We encourage you to join us.

The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) is a not-for-profit sector council, funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sector Council Program. We are dedicated to creating a strong, prepared and highly-educated Canadian ICT industry and workforce. ICTC is a catalyst for change that will provide labour market intelligence, life-long professional development and quality education and training for the Canadian ICT industry, educators, governments and the ICT workforce.
